Open Access Publishing: Resources and Funding

Open Access is a mechanism to publish research in a free, unrestricted online resource. Publishing through Open Access eliminates financial barriers for colleagues, community members, trainees, patients, and the public to read and connect with our research. The University of California has created many resources to help finance and support the research community with Open Access publishing.

Step 1: Identify target journal. Consider journals with OA discount options.

Step 2: Understand how to access OA discounts. UC has agreements with many publishers to cover OA fees, up to 100%.

  • Find the publisher and click on the discount hyperlink
  • Scroll down to find PAYMENT WORKFLOW/INSTRUCTIONS. Each journal has a different process to receive the UC discount.
  • Note that if journal is listed with "remainder covered for unfunded authors", you may request that UC cover all OA fees if you do not have funding for these expenses.

Step 3: Use eScholarship. If you'd like to make your work open but can not pay the OA fee, you can deposit the accepted manuscript in eScholarship, per the UC Open Access policy. eScholarship is a free searchable platform for articles, searchable in Google Scholar (example here). No payment is required, and you can deposit the final version, after peer review changes and before publsiher formatting, immediately upon acceptance.

  • Note that the UC Open Access policy overrides copyright agreements you've signed so you can post in eScholarship.
