Mentoring

Ob Gyn & RS's Mentoring Program is designed to help develop the scientific, clinical and educational career goals of junior (all Assistant and early Associate Professor) faculty, non-faculty academic staff and researchers. It emphasizes one-on-one interactions between well-established departmental faculty mentors with more junior members of the department. Mentors from outside of the department, as part of a mentorship team, are also encouraged in order to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to enhance career objectives, academic advancement and job satisfaction. The Mentoring Program believes in the value of a professional mentor who might not share the same academic area of interest, but can help the mentee to navigate professional development at UCSF, and that mentorship should be a mentee-led endeavor.

Each new faculty and non-faculty academic member shall have six-months from the time of appointment to identify a primary faculty mentor. The department’s mentoring program co-directors, Drs. Sindy Mellon (Center for Reproductive Sciences) and Craig Cohen (Zuckerberg San Francisco General Division, and Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health) are available to provide assistance to network, and help identify potential mentors. The co-directors are supported by Hilary Bunlert. We expect that mentees will meet with their mentors at least three times per year, though encourage more frequent planned encounters including the annual meeting with the Chair.

The Mentoring Program periodically conducts workshops or partners with other department leaders, like the VC for Research or the VCs for EISC, to provide programming of interest.  Based on the results of a mentoring questionnaire completed in March 2020, workshops have focused on fundraising, requirements for career advancement, leadership training, tools to enhance communication, etc. The Mentoring Program will also hold rapid-fire meeting the mentor sessions for persons newly recruited to the department to aid in selecting a mentor.
